SEO Friendly Theme For WordPress

Greetings All,

One of the things that is generally accepted about wordpress is that it is Search Engine Friendly.
But… It could be better.

Here I’m going to give you a theme which can make it better.

If you don’t want to read through all of the following you can download the theme here.

OK, so what makes me think that it could be better?

H1 Tags – WP will generally assign an <H1> tag to the title of the blog at the top of the page – this is basically saying to google that the title of the blog is the most important thing on whatever page they’re looking at. So – Google will think that you have an entire site all about ‘my great blog’ or whatever you’ve called it. WP generally assigns the title of a post an <H2> tag – effectively saying – this is secondary to ‘my great blog name’.
What I’ve done is to assign <H1> tags where they really should be – I’ve also ensured that there’s only ever 1 x <H1> tag on a page. I’ve relegated the blog name to be a mere <H3> – Sorry, but from google’s perspective, you’re not as important as what you’re writing about.

Source ordered code – If that doesn’t make any sense to you, I’ll attempt to explain it simply.
When google’s spider visits your site, it’s not using Internet Explorer or Firefox – so it won’t see any fancy styles you’ve applied using css – all it sees is the raw unstyled output.
Generally this means that the words (remember google doesn’t ‘see’ images) google will see will be whatever you have in the top of your site – this is generally your site name & some sort of navigation, & maybe a banner. Google has to wade through all of this code (& if you have a left nav it gets even worse) before it gets to the content you’d like it to be seeing. What I’ve done here is to structure the page so that when google visits, the first piece of indexable content it can see is a <H1> that is relevant – so, on the index page, the H1 would be the first post listed (the rest would be <H2>), on a post page, the <H1> would be the post title followed directly by the article (that you will have peppered with relevant keywords) itself.
You can see what I’m talking about on your own site by either using Firefox with the web developers toolbar & disabling all styles, or by simply renaming your css file (so the browser can’t access it). I suspect you’ll see some irrelevant blurb before you get to the important information.

You can use the links at the top right hand site to view this demo site as google would see it – i.e. without any styles applied – just click the ‘turn stylesheet OFF’ link & click around the site – you’ll see that the relevant content (with a <H1> title) is displayed first.

I’ll make no apologies for the fact that there is very minimal styling to the theme – this is intended to be a starting point for you to apply your own (or rentacoders icon smile SEO Friendly Theme For Wordpress ) style to…

Here’s the download link again
